‘Wake up and smell’ the data breach fine, warns ICO

The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has imposed a £150,000 penalty on Welcome Financial Services Limited (WFSL) after the company’s Shopacheck business lost two back up tapes containing the names, addresses and telephone numbers of more than half a million people.

The ICO has now issued civil monetary penalties totalling more than £2m. Most of these have been imposed on public authorities, but the rules also apply to small businesses and charities.
